It always amazes me how quickly baby chicks grow and feather out. At 13 days old, they seem to have tripled in size and are sprouting wing and tail feathers. They also easily fly up onto a low perch.
An Easter Egger chick hams it up for the camera while her fellow Buff Orpingtons and Sliver Laced Wyandottes eat dinner.

They don't stay little fuzzballs for very long, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteThere's always at least one curious one in every bunch. They're usually the first one to get on top of the hover and the one you have to be careful not to get out of the box.
.....Alan.
Aren't Arucanas great? (I'm assuming that's what you mean re: Easter Egger) I have 3 1/2 (no, I don't have a mutant half chicken running around--she's half Arucana and half Barred Rock).
ReplyDeleteLast year, the owner of the organic cafe/store (where I sell my eggs) told me that she caught a woman switching eggs around in the cartons so she could have a full dozen of green ones.
BTW, I'm here via Phelan (Homesteading Neophyte).

My goodness! Is it time for you to be getting baby chickens already?
ReplyDeleteThat little EE gave me a good chuckle. Nice photo!
Very Cool Blog! I have been curious about raising backyard chickens for quite a while, so I am bookmarking your blog and will be looking forward to checking back. Adorable Chicks!
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled on your blog. We just got our baby chicks in the mail on wednesday and it's friday now and they are already starting to get little wing feathers. It seems like it happened overnight! Is this normal? I really cant' believe how fast they have changed in just 2 days. I think they are 4 days old now. I am also adding a vitamin/electrolite solution to their water. Do you think this is unnessisary? Thanks for any help. Yours are so sweet! We got buff orpingtons, Ameracauna and plymouth rocks!
ReplyDeleteyes its normal, we got our easter eggers a week ago today, and they are probrably twice as big as they were and are growing wing feathers rapidly, they get bigger every day
